This hike is one of the most beautiful in the Guatemalan Highlands. Witness volcanoes, mountains, and of course the Lake Atitlan. During the tour, we will pass by a wide variety of exotic flora and fauna, plus enjoy local families by spending the night with local families. The hike starts from Quetzaltenango, the center for the Quiche Maya people, and ends at the lake in the Maya town of Tzutujil ethnic group. The route is a total of 42 km.
Day 1: Quetzaltenango
Depart at 06:00 on the bus, followed by a 30-minute walk to our starting point in Xecam, Cantel at 2450m. In the first two hours, we will climb to 3050m, which is one of the hardest parts of the hike. We will peak at one of the highest points in the region known as Altiplano Alaska, then descend and stay with a local family in the Komon Noj community. We will walk 18kms total.
Day 2: Santa Clara la Laguna
Depart at 06:00 to get to Santa Clara la Laguna where we will stay with a family. The route is 14 km.
Day 3: El Rostro Maya
Today is different from previous days as we get up at 4:00 in the morning to see the sunrise at the El Rostro Maya. Here we will have breakfast with magnificent panoramic views of the lake and its three towering volcanoes San Pedro, Toliman, and Atitlan, with a total of 11 kilometers for the day.
